In the ''Dungeons & Dragons'' fantasy role-playing game, the penanggalan is a type of undead creature. It is based on the penanggalan, a ghost of Southeast Asian folk mythology.

The penanggalan appeared in second edition ''Advanced Dungeons & Dragons'' in the ''Monstrous Compendium Fiend Folio Appendix'' (1992).〔Williams, Skip, et al. ''Monstrous Compendium Fiend Folio Appendix'' (TSR, 1992)〕 The penanggalan was further detailed in "Necrology of the Penanggalan" in ''Dragon'' #222 (October 1995).
